If I don't remember to change the sample rate, Foobar2000 locks for a very long time. WASAPI exclusive playback works otherwise passably but as you mention, only if I manually choose a new sample rate in E-MU Control Panel every time that source file sample rate is different from earlier file, which is a major pain. Using DirectSound there are too many disturbances to the music so DirectSound is out of the question. I've been desperately tweaking my E-MU 0204 USB, Foobar2000 and Windows 7 (64 bit) setup for playing back 16-24 bit and 44.1-192 kHz files via USB connection from my laptop. Would you be so kind as to describe what you do to make E-MU 0204 USB to work with ASIO?
I've never actually tried comparing ASIO to WASAPI on my gear for sound quality (they sound so similar or the same to me on my gear that I don't think I could tell them apart). I'm not considering sound quality here in comparing ASIO to WASAPI, just robustness and how well they work on my system with my gear. ASIO seems to be more robust and more resistant to getting digital glitches popping in the music. My M-Audio FireWire 410 can do ASIO or WASAPI exclusive mode but seems to prefer ASIO. So just based on that, ASIO is better with the E-MU. The E-MU doesn't like to switch sample rates when doing WASAPI exclusive. For example, with my E-MU 0204 USB I find that ASIO works best. Use the mode that works best for your gear. Playback modes that are capable of bit perfect playback are ASIO, WASAPI exclusive mode, and kernel streaming. Both J River Media Center and Foobar are also capable of gapless playback. Both can do the bit perfect thing and get along well with a variety of different DACs, sound cards, and USB audio interfaces.
My favorite software players on Windows are J River Media Center and Foobar2000. That's not very convenient and may actually end up resampling behind your back. There are software and hardware combos that don't like switching sample rates. So start with software and hardware combo that allows for bit perfect playback. On the objective front the goal is to be able to get bit perfect playback.
